Mad Science

With falling augmented chords in the verses, this makes for a stranger melody and other musical lines. One day I might release other versions of the lyrics first done as Fabletongue songs. Hopefully. These will have re-imagined harmonies, and this Mad Science song would be the most challenging due to its more chromatic melody.

Mad Science is talking about self-examination of a Jekyll/Hyde kind with conflicting personal characteristics and confusion of emotions wrapped up with a love interest. In other words, maybe common elements of modern life for some when being introspective.

The lyrics here are:

again I try to mix this potion clear

dim the lights, keep it cool in here

the cure eludes me, time is passing

and you’re everything to lose

so careful calculations, much to fear

last time the same mistake cost me dearly

I wonder is the science mad, making me confused

I hear shouting in my head and memory it fades

my doubting is a constant, there are no accolades

I know it’s wrong but still I try to change myself for you

suddenly I turn into a whole other person

hear my own voice echo from somewhere outside

watching myself, it takes a hold like a curse

in here I’m Jekyll and out there I’m Hyde

why do I not realize this experiment will fail and leave me barely alive

what’s wrong, why is it failing and not working this time

imperfect replication or a flaw in design

and I fear all that remains will be an empty shell

what if there’s no way back, now there are signs

my dangerous condition, never knowing who am I

will I learn to accept what I have become for you

don’t want to be like a whole other person

hear my own voice echo from somewhere outside

watching myself when I’m with you

I hear my own voice echo from outside

don’t want to be like that with you

I hear my own voice echo like I’m Hyde

watching myself I know this will fail

and leave me barely alive

now I’m searching for me

don’t want to be like that for you

The lyrics were written in collaboration with Linda Nash and Jeremy Major in Hamilton. The music was written and produced, and the vocals, bass and piano were performed by me. The guitars were expertly played by Bob Wegner, with the excellent drumming by Adam Bowman, recorded by Andrew Kolu in Guelph. Mixing and audio production were done by Philip Strong in Toronto. The pearl mix has my stamp on it. The ruby mix is by Philip Strong.
